Celebration of 106th Birth Anniversary of Poet Sufia Kamal

Bangladesh Mahila Parishad (BMP) celebrated 106th birth anniversary of the founder president poet Sufia Kamal on 20th June 2017 at the Abdul Karim Shahittya Bisharad Auditorium of Bangla Academy at Dhaka. The program was presided over by Dr. Fauzia Moslem, Vice-President of Bangladesh Mahila Parishad. Prof. Dr. Anupam Sen, Eminent Sociologist and Vice-Chancellor of Premier University, Chittagong, delivered the Memorial Lecture on Sufia Kamal.The theme of Memorial Lecture was “Non-communal spirit of liberation war and Education and Poet Sufia Kamal.” This year Bangladesh Mahila Parishad gave Sufia Kamal Award to 3 women who struggled against backward situation of their life and own the battle with braveness and courage. They are agricultural entrepreneur Motahera Nasrin from Jamalpur, fisherwoman Arati Rani Biswas from Rajbari, own child marriage inhibitor Sabana Akter from Rangpur. Bangladesh Mahila Parishad also awarded under-16 Bangladesh women Football Team. On behalf of the team, Mahfuza Aktar Kiron received the award. The recipients expressed their feelings in brief.

The program was divided into two sessions. The Memorial Lecture on the poet, delivered by Prof. Dr. Anupam Sen was in the Inaugural session. The session was conducted by Organizing Secretary Umme Salma Begum of BMP. And Sufia Kamal Award giving ceremony was in the second session. This session was conducted by Joint General Secretary Shima Moslem.


In the welcome speech, Joint General Secretary of BMP, Rakhi Das Purkayastha said that Sufia Kamal believed in overcoming all kind of obstacles to establish an equitable society. Sufia Kamal dreamed of forming a non-communal state and she continued struggle for that till death. Rakhi Das Purkayastha said, we will work together to fulfill Sufia Kamal’s dream and of course we will be successful.

Prof. Dr. Anupam Sen, Eminent Sociologist and Vice-Chancellor of Premier University, said in his Memorial Lecture that to develop our society we have to remove discrimination in education, class based discrimination and the discrimination between men and women in our society. He said, Sufia Kamal played strong role in Language movement in 1952 and all democratic movements of our country including liberation war in 1971. He also said, Sufia Kamal contributed in our educational sector by practicing literature enlightened by her philosophy.


Dr. Fauzia Moslem, Vice-President of BMP said that we have to establish human civilization and build up humanity based society. She also said, we have to be awaken from all kinds of backwardnesses by taking education and have to establish philosophy of poet Sufia Kamal.

Rokeya Sadan Secretary Nasrin Mansur, Training, Research & Library Secretary Rina Ahmed, Publication Secretary Saraban Tohura and International Secretary Rekha Saha presented brief biographies of the recipients of Sufia Kamal award. About 250 participants were present in the program.
