Discussion Meeting on Budget 2022-23: a review of gender sensitivity.

Bangladesh Mahila Parishad organized a discussion Meeting on “ Budget 2022-23: review on gender sensitivity”. Mr. Abul Hasan Mahmud Ali M.P Chairperson of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Finance was present as the Chief gust. At the same time, the Chairman of the Economics Department, Dhaka University Professor M.M. Akash, and the Acting Director of Care Bangladesh (Women and girls empowerment program) were present as special guests.

Prof. Sharmind Nilormi Member, of the Central Committee of Bangladesh Mahila Parishad, and Professor, Dept. of Economics of Jahangirnagar University presented the Keynote Paper. 

Dr. Fauzia Moslem President of Mahila Parishad chaired the program. Maleka Banu, General Secretary delivered the welcome speech.

The Chief guest Mr. Abul Hasan Mahmud Ali M.P said that budget is being allocated for the advancement of women, but with this budget, we have to monitor how much development is happening. Who is developing and whether there is any leakage in development? He also marked in his speech that there are many challenges in implementing the budget. All concerned need to work together to address these challenges.

In the keynote paper, Professor Sharmind Nilormi said the positive aspects of this year’s budget are that the growth rate in the revenue sector has increased, the income rate of expatriates has increased and the credit flow in the private sector has increased. She marked that inflammation is a big challenge. She suggested that the gap between imports and export needs to be reduced and adequate reserves of foreign exchanges should be maintained.

Dr. Fauzia Moslem said Bangladesh is in a good position in South Asia according to the Gender gap Index. We have to work for Keeping it up. She noted that although the participation of women in the economy has increased the introduction of the automation process, it will create a big challenge for garments women workers. We have to think about it. She recommended a specific budget for education, health, employment and the prevention of violence against women.
