Calling on the government to establish equality between men and women- in accordance with the basic principle of CEDAW (Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women) Charter a press conference titled “Full Ratification and Implementation of CEDAW to Elimination of Discrimination Against Women” was organized by Social Action Committee (Platform of 66 organizations). Dr. Fauzia Moslem, President of the Central Committee of Bangladesh Mahila Parishad (BMP), was the moderator in this press conference. On behalf of Social Action Committee, Jinat Ara Haque, National Coordinator of WE CAN Alliance, presented a written statement.
As moderator’s speech Dr. Fauzia Moslem Emphasized on to ensure state’s responsibility to establish equality between men and women in according to the basic principle of CEDAW Charter. Due to Bangladesh government’s reservation on article 02 of CEDAW Charter, proper equality is not being ensured, it is important to take proper responsibility of the state in the case. Also, what steps are taking by the state to fulfill its responsibilities is important ! Alongside, she added that, to achieve specific goals of women’s movement , signatory programs should be taken. In this programs, young people should come forward and the country should be taken forward with the spirit of our liberation war in 1971.
Maleka Banu, General Secretary of Bangladesh Mahila Parishad, along with Nurun Nahar Begum from Action Aid, Mahbuba Akhtar from Nagorik Uddyog, Shahida Parveen Shikha from Trade Union Center, Sahida Ferdous Munni from Steps Towards Development, Ferdousi Sultana, Gender specialist, Samsun Nahar Poly from CAMPE, Mahbuba Akhtar from BLAST, Samapika Haldar from ADAB, and Salma Mahbub from B-SCAN presented on behalf of Social Action Committee, BMP’s central and Dhaka city committee leaders,secretaries, staffs and journalists were present at the press conference.
