“International Women’s Day 2025: Empowerment Rally and Cultural Event at Shaheed Minar By BMP”

On March 8, 2025, at 11:00 AM, the Social Action Committee, comprising 67 women’s, human rights, and development organizations, hosted an International Women’s Day event at the Central Shaheed Minar. The event featured a gathering, cultural performances, and a rally, presided over by Dr. Fauzia Moslem, President of Bangladesh Mahila Parishad (BMP).


Speakers included Khushi Kabir, Coordinator of Nijera Kori; Maleka Banu, General Secretary of Bangladesh Mahila Parishad; Shahnaz Sumi, Director of Bangladesh Nari Progati Sangha; Shahida Parvin Shikha, General Secretary of the National Women Workers Trade Union Center; Nilufa Begum, Deputy Director of Shakti Foundation; and Falguni Tripura, Coordinator of Bangladesh Adivasi Nari Network. Kazi Gulshan Ara Dipa from Karmojibi Nari read the declaration.


The program opened with protest songs by Sanowara Jahan Nitu and a dance by Mukta Thakur’s troupe.
In her address, Dr. Fauzia Moslem stressed the need to overcome challenges and push for progress. She urged the government to uphold law and order, withdraw reservations on CEDAW provisions, end child marriage, and ensure equal property rights for women.


Khushi Kabir highlighted the issue of sexual violence in public and called for collective action to end it. Maleka Banu emphasized the progress women in Bangladesh are making despite challenges and urged for solidarity against forces threatening their rights, particularly for minority and indigenous women.
Shahnaz Sumi discussed the necessity of government action to secure safety for all, especially women. Shahida Parvin Shikha demanded stricter legal measures against offenders. Nilufa Begum pointed to the insecurity women face everywhere and called for a strong movement against gender-based violence. Falguni Tripura advocated for a united protest against all violence against women, regardless of ethnicity or class.


Following the speeches, a list of 14 demands was presented, and participants marched from the Central Shaheed Minar to the Press Club. Approximately 500 people, including committee members, journalists, and organization officials, took part.
Zinath Ara Haque, National Coordinator of We Can Alliance, coordinated the event.
