On the death anniversary of Sufia Kamal, a tribute: How many people are truly deserving of a person’s selfless love?”

On November 20, 2024, a Wednesday, a commemoration took place to mark the 25th anniversary of the death of the poet Sufia Kamal, who was the founding president of the Bangladesh Mahila Parishad (BMP) and a prominent leader in the human rights movement. The tribute event commenced at 10:00 AM in the auditorium of the Sufia Kamal building at the central office of Bangladesh Mahila Parishad (BMP) in Dhaka. Presided over by Dr. Fauzia Moslem, the organization’s president, the event saw the presence of Sufia Kamal’s daughters-human rights activist Sultana Kamal and artist Saeeda Kamal-alongside representatives from the Manobik Sangskritik Foundation.


The ceremony started with a flower-laying tribute at Sufia Kamal’s portrait by the central and Dhaka city committee leaders of Bangladesh Mahila Parishad (BMP), along with executive members and officials, joined by Sufia Kamal’s daughters. Musical performances in memory of Sufia Kamal were delivered by Shahzadi Shamima Afzal, a senior training and research officer, and Ashru Bhattacharya, the superintendent of Rokeya Sadan.


During her tribute, Sultana Kamal celebrated her mother’s enduring dedication to women’s rights, which she considered her life’s calling. She expressed optimism that guided by the spirit of the Liberation War, Bangladesh Mahila Parishad (BMP) would continue to promote women’s rights and strengthen their societal role.
Dr. Fauzia Moslem, in her address, noted the recent disrespect toward groundbreaking women like Begum Rokeya, seeing it as a hindrance to women’s progress. She called for continuing to carry forward the ideals of Sufia Kamal.
