Bangladesh Mahila Parishad (BMP) and BD Runners organized the “Rokeya Run” on December 7, 2024, at 6:30 AM. The run began at the Central Shaheed Minar and ended at Shahbagh. The event was held to honor Rokeya Day 2024 and to be united against violence towards women and girls. Dr. Fauzia Moslem, President of the Central Committee of BMP, gave the opening speech, followed by Maleka Banu, tGeneral Secretary. Special guest Nishat Majumdar, Bangladesh’s first female Everest climber, also addressed the event.

Dr. Fauzia Moslem expressed hope that the Rokeya Run would overcome barriers and inspire participants to strive for progress. She emphasized that followers of Rokeya will continue to pursue her vision, aiming for equality in families, society, and the state.
Maleka Banu, General Secretary, highlighted the role of Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain in women’s emancipation. She was a noted feminist, thinker, philosopher, and writer from the subcontinent. Her progressive vision continues to inspire the pursuit of a society inclusive for both men and women. Sustainable Development Goal 5, concerning gender equality and empowerment, aligns with Rokeya’s aspirations.

Nishat Majumdar thanked BMP for organizing the event and expressed her desire for the Rokeya Run to become an annual event. She stressed the significance of attaining gender equality and creating violence-free families and communities.
The event began with speeches, followed by Seuty Sabur, Bangladesh Mahila Parishad outlining the run’s rules and route. Participants sang the national anthem and lit lamps before Rokeya’s portrait. Post-run, messages of solidarity were shared by various running communities, including Bashundhara, Agargaon, Avijatri, Chandrima, and Mirpur Runners. They highlighted challenges women face in different events including different events including running events and committed to supporting initiatives for a safe and violence-free environment for women and girls.

Around 200 participants from diverse backgrounds, including activists, BD Runners members, leaders and members from the Bangladesh Mahila Parishad’s Central and Dhaka City Committees, along with officials and journalists participated in the run. The event by Rekha Saha, Legal Aid Secretary of BMP.
